NAB man, ASI face drug dealing charges
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 29th Jan:
Along with informing about arrest of a woman drug dealer, NAB superintendent of police (SP) W Basu revealed that legal processes are being initiated against a NAB member and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police in connection with hoarding and unauthorised possession of brown sugar.
Assisted by volunteers of Lilong-based Anti-Social Prevention Organisations (ASPO), a women’s organisation, and All Lilong Anti-Drug Association (ALADA), a joint team of Thoubal district police and personnel of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) arrested the woman on the charge of trading drugs, said Basu, who is also the PRO of police department.
Apart from recovering huge quantity of psychotropic drugs, the joint team also seized Rs 1,07,830 in cash on Sunday, he informed.
Speaking to newspersons at his Old Lambulane office on Monday, the NAB SP informed that the joint team rounded up one Serabanu alias Abem (30) w/o Md Minhadur Rahaman of Lilong Haoreibi Chandakhong from the couple’s house around 3.30 pm Sunday.
While stating that the joint team also comprised women police, Basu informed that the seized drugs included 88.3 gm of heroin, 13.3 gm of brown sugar, 1275 pieces of World is Yours (WY) tablet and 289 Nitrosun-10 tablets, besides the hard cash.
Lilong police has registered a case against Serabanu and started further investigation.
On the other-hand, the SP disclosed that a NAB member namely M Kishorkumar has been sent to jail and placed under suspension pending an enquiry in connection with recovery of 1.7 kg of brown sugar from the latter’s possession on January 4.
Further stating that Kishorkumar kept the narcotic drugs without any official consent after the consignment was seized from another person, Basu further revealed about the arrested NAB member claiming during preliminary interrogation that one ASI of police posted at Noney police station had taken away brown sugar weighing around 1.5 kg from him (Kishorkumar).
Naming the accused ASI as Basiruddin of Lilong Haoreibi Lou Mangaa, the SP mentioned that in addition to Tamenglong district SP issuing an order to suspend the said ASI legal process has been initiated to round up the absconding police ASI.
Keishorkumar also reportedly disclosed that the brown sugar consignments belonged to one Mohammad Amiduddin, also from Lilong Haoreibi Lou Mangaa.
Though NAB and Thoubal district police conducted searches at Amiduddin’s residence thrice recently, the accused person continues to remain at large, Basu conceded, adding that process is underway to take to legal recourse for rounding up the suspected kingpin.
Joining the media briefing, SP (Thoubal) K Meghachandra conveyed appreciation to activists of the two Lilong organisations as well as some local leaders for their cooperation and assistance in effecting the arrest of Serabanu.
As the joint team ventured into Lilong Haoreibi Chandakhong on Sunday afternoon, Serabanu was spotted hurrying inside her house in a suspicious manner. After cordoning off the residence the women police launched search and subsequently recovered the drugs, the SP recounted.
Informing that a special unit was formed some days back under the supervision of NAB SP subsequent to inputs about instances of drug smuggling and dealing in Lilong areas, Meghachandra said that the unit has expanded its scope of activities to Thoubal areas as well.
