DIPR IMPHAL, 27th Jan: Chief minister N Biren felicitated World record holder and World Champion weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and extended cash incentive of Rs 20 lakh to her in a solemn function held at Chief Minister’s Office on Saturday.
Speaking at the occasion, the CM said, “It is a proud moment for all of us that Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian after 22 years to claim a gold medal in 48 kg category at the World Weightlifting Championship.” The whole state and the people feel proud of her achievement, he added.
Commenting on the government’s initiatives for the sportspersons, he said that the government will try its maximum level to provide best offers to those players, who bring laurel to the state. He assured that the government will offer a suitable government job to Mirabai Chanu soon.
Mentioning that the state has a limited resource and has been dependent on Centre, Biren stressed that the new government has already started resource mobilisation at maximum level. He also mentioned that around 140 sports persons have been given government jobs till now. He then wished Mirabai the very best for her future career and competitions.
It may be mentioned that Karnam Malleswari was the first Indian to win a gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships held at China in 1995.
During the function, Saikhom Mirabai narrated her pains and journeys to emerge as World Champion. She appealed to the authorities concerned to construct well-equipped hostels and provide essential facilities to nurture sports persons of the state.
Forest and environment minister Th Shyamkumar, PHE Losii Dikho, tribal & hill areas development minister N Kayasii, Manipur Pollution Control Board chairman L Radhakishore, chief secretary RR Rashmi, YAS secretary Bobby Waikhom, officials and well-wishers of Mirabai Chanu also attended the function.
