Dr Meinya demands re-look on Merger Agreement
IMPHAL 28th Dec:
MP Dr T Meinya has drawn attention of the Parliament (Lok Sabha) for having a structured discussion on Manipur Merger Agreement, 1949 at present in the context of past development.
Raising the matter under Rule 377 at the Lok Sabha session on Thursday, Dr T Meinya said the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur got merged into the Union of India on October 15, 1949 by an Agreement signed between Maharaja of Manipur Bodhchandra Singh and advisor to the Government of India V P Menon in the presence of the Governor of Assam Sriprakash on September 21, 1949. The Agreement was rejected by the then Manipur State Durbar and the same Agreement was also never ratified by the Parliament of India. The present state of affairs prevailing in the state of Manipur vis-a-vis the role of the Government of India in this alleged forced Merger of Manipur called for a fresh re-look, he added.
