Considering the proposals made by the local MLA and the Gorkha Students’ Union, as well as taking into account the present need, Kanglatongbi Hindi High School will be upgraded into a higher secondary school at the earliest, education minister Th Radheshyam has assured.
The minister gave the assurance while speaking as chief guest of the Golden Jubilee celebration of All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union (AMGSU) held at Kanglatongbi Hindi High School on Wednesday.
The minister stated that Gorkha community is considered to be one of the most courageous and sincere communities. Gorkha community has been contributing their share in the development of Manipur, India and also across the globe.
The loyalty, sincerity and courage of Gorkhas were so much impressed by the British that they (British) took two units of Gorkha regiment to England when they left India, he said, and added that even to this day Gorkhas are considered the best while safeguarding the country and as such they are being respected and admired by the people from all over the world.
The minister went on to remark that today’s Manipur or India would not have come this far without the contribution of the Gorkhas. “The community, through their undying spirit of bravery, loyalty and sacrifice for the welfare of the people, has made huge contributions in the nation building process as well.”
Minister Radheshyam further informed that there is a huge population of labourers among Gorkha community engaged in different types of work. There is the need to identify them and get registered for labour card so that they could benefit from the government schemes. “If the labourers possess labour cards issued by the state government, they would get help in the education of their children and also provide financial help during times of illness.
Congratulating the union on the Golden Jubilee celebration, the minister noted that fifty years is a very long time but the union needs to prepare for facing many hardships and problems which are yet to be overcome. Calling upon the students who are future pillars of the society, he appealed to all to unite and march ahead for upliftment of the poor and weaker sections of the society for an inclusive growth.
Radheshyam assured that the government is ready to extend the union any assistance and help it requires.
Sekmai MLA Heikham Dingo, who was present as guest of honour, said that even though the Gorkha community is a minority group in the state, the community has contributed a lot in developing Manipur to the present status.
He also informed the gathering that the government is all set to take up different developmental programmes for the Gorkha community in the next five years.
The MLA also recalled the contributions made by Niranjan Singh Chettry during the freedom struggle of Manipur and said that his contributions will be remembered for all time to come.
A memorial stone was unveiled during the golden jubilee celebration while the organisers submitted a memorandum to the minister.
The function was also attended by Political Advisor to Chief Minister Dr RK Ranjan Singh, Imphal West DC Ningthoujam Geoffrey, members of AMGSU and locals.
