Unknown assailants hurl Chinese grenade at shops, fail to explode


In a shocking incident, unknown assailants hurled a Chinese made hand grenade at a shopping centre in the heart of Ukhrul town around 5:45 pm on Friday. However, the explosive which landed in front of two stores selling clothes, failed to explode.

According to the two shop keepers Mangal Mahto and Gopal Kumar who were inside their stores at the time of the incident, they saw a package wrapped in polythene landing in front of their shops which are located along the pedestrians' lane on the western side of the Viewland Baptist Church.

They said that initially they thought it was just a waste item but it felt hot on touching so they grew suspicious of the content.

Talking to media persons, Mangal and Gopal said that they had no idea who could be behind the act as they did not receive any threats from any groups or individuals and added that they did not even expect to receive any demand from anyone either since they run a small business.

Meanwhile, around 6:30 pm both teams of Assam Rifles and Ukhrul police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. The security forces were in the process of pressing into service of bombs squad of the AR for safe disposal of the explosive till the time of filing this report.

Regarding the incident, Ukhrul public have decried the act as unwarranted and termed it as an attempt by unscrupulous elements to create chaos and panic during this festive season.
