Three more die, 371 fresh cases in two days

IMPHAL, 16th Aug: Three new deaths and 371 fresh Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the past two days taking the death toll in the state to 16 and total confirmed cases to 4569 including 1221 locally transmitted cases and 1192 personnel of CAPF.
JNIMS doctor Dr Th Uthan, who was hailed for successful treatment of the first Covid-19 patient of the state, is also among the 371 new positive cases detected in the last two days. His sample was found positive for the virus on Saturday. He recently made headlines after a video, showing him in full PPE suit fainted in the hallway of JNIMS Covid ward but continued to look after the Covid patients in a wheelchair after some patients helped him, went viral on social media.
According to a statement of the Covid-19 Common Control Room (CCR) issued on Sunday evening, 179 people, which include 68 (42 male & 26 female) from the general population and 111 personnel from CAPF, were confirmed as new COVID-19 positive cases. The positive cases were detected at the VRDLs of RIMS (73), JNIMS (40), Raj Medicity (3), DH Churachandpur (20), Babina Diagnostics (5), Senapati DTO (1), Shija Hospital (4), and Imphal West RAT (33).
Eight from among the general population, two each from Noney & Ukhrul and one each from Imphal East, Senapati, Kangpokpi, & Imphal West) are returnees from other states while the remaining 60 are locals without any significant travel history. One each is from Senapati & Ukhrul, four from Thoubal, eight from Imphal East and 46 from Imphal West district. They are being shifted to Covid Care facilities and necessary measures like containment and contact tracing are in place, the statement said.
It also informed that three persons have died of Covid-19 and co-morbid heath conditions at JNIMS and RIMS on Sunday. The first one was a 73-year old man identified as L Kullachandra of Wahengbam Leikai, Imphal West. He was admitted to JNIMS hospital as Covid patient with fever and difficulties in breathing on Friday. He succumbed on Sunday morning. The second one was a 44-year old BSF jawan - Basantakumar of 182 battalion, Koirengei. As per official report, he had been suffering from acute chronic kidney disease (CKD), uraemix encephalopathy, severe anaemia and Covid-19 associated pneumonia, and was admitted to RIMS Nephrology department on Friday. He passed away at 9.40 am Sunday.
The third victim was a 94-year old man from Thoubal district identified as Nipamacha of Kiyam. He died at RIMS hospital due to Covid associated health complications and other co-morbid conditions. With the three new deaths, the cumulative number of deaths in the state has risen to 16.
The 111 CAPF personnel include around 50 personnel from CRPF Langjing, 12 from Kakching AR, one from Thoubal AR and one Airport security guard. The positive cases from among general population include two doctors and a 16-year old girl from Kha Sanjenbam among others. Besides, a rifleman of 6th Manipur Rifles, Ukhrul was found positive for Covid-19 which prompted the district magistrate to declare the entire campus as containment zone.
In the past twenty-four hours, 194 patients were discharged RIMS (5), DH Thoubal (5), CCC Meitram (45), Lamboi Khongngangkhong (44), Tamenglong (30), Thoubal (26), Senapati (8), RD Wing (13) as well as 13 from CCC for CAPF personnel only after they were found COVID-19 free on RT PCR test.
The cumulative number of positive cases has reached 4569 which include 3377 from general population and 1192 CAPF personnel. Number of discharged cases is 2632 (general population – 2385 and CAPF personnel – 247) and number of active cases is 1921 (general population – 977 and CAPF personnel – 944). The recovery rate is 57.60 per cent and fatality rate is 0.35 per cent.
As per data maintained by The People’s Chronicle, total count of locally transmitted cases has reached 1221, which is 26.72 per cent of the total cases. The rate further increases to 36.15 per cent if the number of CAPF personnel is deducted from the total confirmed cases. Imphal West has 427 such cases out of 870 and tops the tally in terms of both total and locally transmitted cases. Churachandpur district is in the second place with 533 total confirmed cases. Thoubal district is in the second place in term of local cases with 340 out of 495 being cases without any travel history. Imphal East has at least 147 such cases.
Data analysed by this daily shows that the rate of infection has reached 1472.4 confirmed cases per million population against the national average of 1976. Test rate has also improved to 37,074 tests per million population against the national average of 21,213.
Earlier on Saturday, 192 people including 61 (40 male & 21 female) from the general population and 131 personnel from CAPF were confirmed as COVID-19 positive cases. Out of the 61 fresh cases from the general population, 15 (Chandel - 6, Imphal East - 4, Kakching - 1, Kamjong - 2, Senapati - 2) are returnees and the rest 46 are locals without any significant travel history. One locally transmitted case is from Senapati, two from Chandel, four from Bishnupur, five each from Imphal West & Thoubal, eight from Noney and 21 from Imphal East districts. On Saturday, 78 persons were also discharged from different facilities, informed another statement of CCR issued on Saturday.
