Virus claims NAB jawan as state’s tally crosses 4000

IMPHAL, 13th Aug: A 37-year old police constable attacked to Narcotic Affairs and Border (NAB) has become the 13th victim of Covid-19 in the state even as the number of positive cases without travel history has reached 1057 on Thursday while the state’s total tally crossed the 4000 mark.
A doctor of RIMS hospital, a nurse and a housekeeping staff of a private hospital in Lamphel area are among the fresh Covid-19 positive cases as over 100 cases of local transmission were detected in different parts of the state.
According to a statement from the Covid-19 Common Control Room, 130 people including 91 (51 male & 40 female) from the general population and 39 personnel from Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) were confirmed as new COVID-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours. The positive cases were detected at RIMS VRDL (57), STDC/IRL (1), Raj Medicity (5), Shija Hospital (1), DH Chandel (5), DH Churachandpur (7), DH Thoubal (43), Imphal West RAT (5), and Babina Diagnostics (6).
The four cases from Churachandpur district are returnees while the remaining 87 are locally transmitted cases. One of them is from Senapati, three from Bishnupur, 12 from Imphal East, 24 from Imphal West and 47 from Thoubal district. They are being shifted to Covid Care facilities and all precautionary measures like containment and contact tracing are in place, the statement said.
In the past 24 hours, 64 patients were discharged from RIMS (1), CCCS of Meitram (40), Kakching (15), Kamjong (4) and Phungyar (4) after they were found free of COVID-19 traces in RT PCR test. However, the statement did not provide district specific information of the newly discharged cases.
It also added that a 37-year old man from Imphal West district with history of hypertension expired at RIMS due to Covid-19 infection and the cumulative number of deaths in the state now is 13.
Meanwhile, total number of confirmed positive cases has reached 4112 of which 3177 are from among the general population and 935 CAPF personnel. Number of discharged cases is 2295 (general population – 2123 and CAPF personnel – 172) while number of active cases is 1804 (general population – 1041 and CAPF personnel – 763). The recovery rate witnessed further decline and stands at 55.81 per cent on Thursday.
Status report shared by IDSP informed that the state has conducted 1,07,469 tests till date including 1670 conducted on Thursday. In the past 24 hours, 563 truckers and 195 commuters including 115 flight passengers were screened for Covid symptoms before entering the state.
JNIMS VRDL had stopped testing for two consecutive days for installation of a new machine and fumigation purpose which also include additional electrification works. Testing operation resumed from Thursday evening, a source said.
On the other hand, besides the cases mentioned in the CCR report, a young doctor of RIMS hospital and two other persons were found positive of Covid-19 at the hospital on Thursday evening, according to our source.
The doctor is said to be an anaesthesiologist. The other two are from Thangmeiband and Phubala. Two staff of a private hospital in Lamphel area were also found positive in the evening. One is a nurse while the other is a male housekeeping staff.
Four persons from 2nd MR family line were also found positive of Covid-19. They are wife and children of a jawan, who is a driver of an officer. Of the three children, one is a 14-year old boy.
Four more personnel of 44 Assam Rifles in Tamenglong district were also tested positive on Thursday. They are from among 48 primary contacts of a previous case found among the AR personnel. Noney district also reported three fresh cases.
Imphal East district also reported five new cases including a 16-year old girl. They are from Kongpal Chingangbam, Kongba Nongthombam Leikai, Naharup Pangong Makhong, and Clarist Home, Mantripukhri. One fresh case is also reported in Ukhrul district. The patient is said to be returnee.
Meanwhile, number of locally transmitted case has reached 1057 which is 25.70 per cent of the total 4112 confirmed cases as per data maintained by The People’s Chronicle. However, the rate further increases to 33.9 per cent if the count of CAPF personnel is deducted from the total cases. Imphal West tops the tally with 742 total confirmed cases of which 348 (46.90 per cent) are locally transmitted cases. Thoubal district is in the second place with 477 total cases and 323 (67.71 per cent) being locally transmitted cases. Rates of local transmission in some other districts with high count are 42 per cent in Jiribam, 37 per cent in Imphal East, 31 per cent in Bishnupur, and 24 per cent each in Noney and Chandel districts.
The figure might vary from the official count as the health authority does not release such data to the media. Data analysed by this daily shows that rate of infection has increased to 1325 confirmed cases per million population against the national average of 1829 CPM.
Test rate has also improved to 34,633.90 tests per million population against the national average of 19,431. The average growth rate in the last one week is 4.1 per cent while case fatality rate is 0.31 per cent.
