‘Cong to challenge confidence motion’
IMPHAL, 8th Aug: The ‘no confidence’ motion moved by Congress party against BJP led coalition government and council of ministers has been rejected.
However, government moved a ‘confidence’ motion instead and listed it in the business agenda for the 11th session of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly scheduled on August 10 and voting for the motion likely the same day.
Meanwhile, MPCC spokesperson K Meghachandra informed The People’s Chronicle that Congress party welcomes government’s trust motion and is ready to challenge it.
In a telephonic chat Saturday, Meghachandra said he is aware of coalition government’s ‘confidence motion and its listing in business agenda of the upcoming assembly session.
K Meghachandra also informed that Congress party legislators held a meeting at former chief minister O Ibobi Singh’s official residence from 5pm Saturday and chalked out strategies to defeat the ‘confidence’ motion. He said that Congress party is ready to bring drug haul cases involving high profile people on the floor of the House and corner the government on the issue.
While informing that Congress party welcomes inclusion of ‘confidence’ motion instead of party’s ‘no confidence’ motion in the business agenda, K Meghachandra said the coalition government led by BJP is almost unable to control Covid pandemic due to wrong policy and supply of substandard medical kits for frontline workers was main factor worsening the situation. Congress party is ready to bring this issue to the floor of the House apart from drug issues, he said and urged non-BJP ruling members of the House to support in the interest of the people. Meanwhile, some Congress MLAs did not attend the meeting held at O Ibobi Singh’s residence.
Though how many Congress MLAs were absent in the meet could not be immediately ascertained, a reliable source informed that 12 MLAs out of party’s total 24 MLAs did not attend the meet. This has raised a question whether some Congress MLAs are on the ruling side or whether there is resentment over O Ibobi Singh’s CLP leadership.
A senior leader of Congress party, however, informed that there is report of BJP spreading rumour against the party ahead of the assembly session but 23 out of party’s 24 members are in touch. Sagolband MLA RK Imo might not follow party’s principle as he had already moved towards family politics, the leader said while expressing hope that all the members of the party would follow party principle.
