80 cases sans travel history detected
Local spread begins in Cdl, PHQ, Lamphel & Heingang PSes, Wangoi PHC; threat lingers in 1st MR, RIMS
IMPHAL, 3rd Aug: Even though the state health authority has not declared community spread in the state, nearly 20 per cent of the total confirmed cases are locally transmitted ones, thus suggesting early stage of community spread.
As per data maintained by The People’s Chronicle, at least 550 cases of the total confirmed ones do not have travel history but maximum of them have contact history with previous positive cases. However, source of infection for some cases are not known and authority claim to be investigating the same.
As per the latest report received here, local transmission has begun in Chakpikarong sub-division of Chandel district. At the same time, the virus has reached the police headquarters, Lamphel police station, and Wangoi PHC while 1st battalion MR campus and Thoubal district continue to face the wrath of the pandemic.
According to a statement of the Covid-19 Common Control Room (CCR), 84 people (51M, 33F) from general population and 5 people from Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) were confirmed as new COVID-19 positive cases at the VRDL of RIMS (67), DH Thoubal (16) and Babina Diagnostic Centre (6) in the past 24 years. They belong to the districts of Imphal West (51), Thoubal (30), Bishnupur (1) and Ukhrul (2). Four persons (2 each from Ukhrul and Thoubal) are returnees from other states. The rest are locally transmitted cases without any travel history. There is no report of death due to Covid-19 from any part of the state on Monday. Of the 51 cases in Imphal West district, maximum is among 1st and 8th MR personnel and their families. Police headquarters is also affected by the virus as four of its staff members were found positive.
In the past 24 hours, 29 patients were discharged from CCCs of Meitram (21), Senapati (2), Churachandpur (5) and NIELIT Churachandpur (1) after they were found COVID-19 free on RT PCR test. However, no district specific information has been provided by the authority.
The cumulative number of positive cases is 2920 while numbers of active and recovered cases are 1147 and 1766 respectively. The cumulative number of death is 7. The recovery rate has further reduced to 60.47 percent and the death rate stands at 0.23 per cent. Rate of infection has increased to 941 confirmed cases per one million population against the national average of 1376.
IDSP has stopped releasing data for cumulative tests conducted since the past couple of days and there is no means to calculate the test rate. It has also stopped sharing information on the number of people staying in quarantine centres and how many people entered the state through the Imphal Airport, Mao Gate and Jiribam Gate.
Meanwhile, a highly placed source said that 2nd OC of Lamphel PS and MO in-charge of Wangoi PHC have contracted the disease after their samples tested positive on Monday. Two police constable posted at Heingang police station have also been tested positive. Nine fresh cases including a 7-year old boy and an 8-year old boy were also found in 1st MR campus on Monday.
An interned doctor and another lady PG doctor along with an employee of RIMS were also found positive for Covid-19, according to another highly placed source. They were staying at the hostels and quarters of RIMS hospital. The source also said that six people from Ukhrul district were also found to be positive. They are residents of Longpi, Wunghon, Poi, Halang villages. However, no details are known, whether they are returnees or cases of local transmission.
Thoubal district reported 25 fresh cases at RIMS, Babina Diagnostics and District Hospital in the late evening report received from the district authority. Out of the 25 new cases, one is a returnee and he was staying at Sangaiyumpham quarantine centre. Details of the other two cases from Thoubal Ningombam could not be ascertained but the remaining 22 are locally transmitted cases. They are from Khangabok, Wangbal, Haokha, Kiyam, Wangkhem, Wangjing, Lilong and Athokpam areas. Rapid Antigen Tests are being conducted at Thoubal district hospital and three other locations till late night and there are possibilities of detecting more cases are high. As of now, the district has three fatalities, 180 active cases and 150 recovered cases. Currently, 144 people are staying in different quarantine centres.
In Kakching district also, four more cases including a seven-year old child and an AR rifleman were confirmed on Monday taking the tally of the district to 159. The three civilians were found positive for Covid-19 during contact tracing operation following detection of a case without travel history in Santhel area on Sunday. They have been sent to Covid Care Centre set up at Padma Ratna English School. The AR rifleman is from 39 Assam Rifles and he is said to be a close contact of an earlier case (returned from leave) detected in the battalion.
At present, 48 people are staying in different quarantine centres while four are under home quarantine. Only two out of 26 quarantine centres are being utilised in the district.
Five cases without any travel history have also been detected in Chakpikarong sub-division of Chandel district and they are said to be close contacts of the 6th victim of Covid-19, who passed away at CMC hospital few days ago. Four of them are natives of Thorcham village and the other from Chakpi Bazar.
They are close contacts of Bd Khelthung Anal, who died of Covid-19 related complications on July 31, during his visit to his native village on July 18. Further testing of other close contacts and family members of the five will be conducted on Tuesday. Several individuals, who visited Khelthung during his ailing time, are also staying in a quarantine centre and their tests will be conducted soon, according to CMO Chandel Dr Serthani Serbum.
