Police officers, lawyer, doctors, hostel staff test positive


IMPHAL, 31st Jul: Several frontline workers including two doctors, personnel of both state and central forces including SP of Kamjong district and OC of Mayang Imphal PS, a lawyer and two staff of an MU hostel were tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday as the pandemic situation deepened in the state.
According to a statement of Covid-19 Common Control Room (CCR), 116 people (97 male & 19 female) were confirmed as new Covid-19 positive cases at VRDLs of RIMS (54) and JNIMS (61), and Babina Diagnostic Centre (1) in the past 24 hours. Of them, 80 are security personnel but whether they belong to state force or central forces are not specified in the statement.
The new cases include 59 from Churachandpur, Imphal East (1), Imphal West (12), Kakching (24), Kangpokpi (1), Tamenglong (2), Tengnoupal (1), Thoubal (15), and Senapati (1). Seven persons from Imphal West, 10 from Thoubal and two from Tamenglong do not have travel history while the rest are returnees from other states, the statement said, while adding that the new cases are being shifted to Covid Care Centres. Of the 59 cases of Churachandpur district, 55 are BSF personnel posted at the Subsidiary Training Centre in the district.
It further informed that 17 persons were discharged from RIMS (1), JNIMS (5), CCCs of Meitram (4), Senapati (3), and Thoubal (4). However, no specific information was revealed in the statement. Cumulative number of positive cases has reached to 2621 while numbers of active, recovered and death cases are 927, 1689 and 5 respectively. Recovery rate is 64.44 per cent.
Meanwhile, it has become almost impossible to trace cases of local transmission as the situation traversed into the boundary of community transmission and the health authority continues to withhold detailed data or information. However, a rough calculation based on the data compiled by The People’s Chronicle suggests nearly 400 cases without any travel history. Two more positive cases were also detected in Kakching district taking the tally to 154 on Friday. Both are returnees and were tested positive during their stay in quarantine centres. Till date, 100 patients have recovered and 54 are undergoing treatment of which 16 are in the CCC of Padma Ratna English School. In all, 49 persons are staying in different quarantine centres in the district, according to district surveillance officer Dr Kiran Elangbam.
On the other hand, our source said that SP of Kamjong district, OC of Mayang Imphal police were found positive during test conducted on Friday. Moreover, 34 people from the 1st MR family line, who include personnel and family members, were found positive on Friday. They also include personnel from the rear office of 8th MR located inside the 1st MR battalion campus. One of them is driver of NAB OC and the other a woman police constable, who was involved in the arrest of a person accused in a drug case. Besides, a lawyer, who was present during the hearing of the accused person at the special ND&PS Court was also found positive for Covid-19.
Another source said that 44 personnel of Assam Rifles, who are staying at TM Kasom ITI quarantine centre and Somsai QC (two personnel) were found positive for Covid-19. A young woman native of Ukhrul district, who returned by flight, was also found positive at Phungreitang transit quarantine centre. Consequently, district magistrate Ukhrul Joseph Pauline Kamson has declared Block 1 of the transit quarantine centre as containment zone.
Two professors, two nurses and two staff of RIMS Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) department were also found positive for Covid-19 late Thursday night, according to a highly placed source. With the six new cases, at least 28 staff of RIMS have been infected by the virus so far.
Four personnel of CRPF battalion at Mongsangei were also found positive for Covid-19. Two staff of Marjing Boys Hostel, Manipur University were also found positive on Friday night. Mention may be made that the hostel is being utilised as a quarantine centre.
The state has so far conducted 85,411 tests including 1547 conducted in the last 24 hours. Test rate has improved to 27,525 tests per million population while the rate of infection has increased to 845 confirmed cases per million population against the national average of 1268.
Manipur is in the third place among the northeast states and in the 25th place among the states and UTs in terms of confirmed cases.
