3 AR soldiers die, 5 hurt in Chandel ambush
IMPHAL, 30th Jul: At least three soldiers of Assam Rifles were killed and five others suffered injuries in an ambush on a patrol party of 4 AR at Khongtal village under Chakpikarong sub-division in Chandel district.
The slain soldiers have been identified as havildar Pranei Kalita, son of Hari Prasad Kalita of Ghatabar, Assam; rifleman Ratan Salam, son of Ibomcha of Kakching Makha Leikai and rifleman Methna Konyak, son of Yangam Konyak of Totok Chingyu, Nagaland. Those injured in the ambush are subedar S Haokip, havildar Nitul Sharma, rifleman Sikinder Singh, rifleman Sandeep Kumar and rifleman Anish Kumar.
According to a reliable source, the incident happened at about 6.30pm Wednesday when an IED laid by unknown militants exploded while a patrol team of 4 AR was on its way to Khongtal post after ROP duty. Seconds after the IED exploded, the assailants fired towards the patrol team as well as the nearby Khongtal AR post. A heavy fire-fight ensued between the two sides for around 10 minutes when AR soldiers retaliated. When checked after the encounter, Pranei Kalita, Ratan Salam and Methna Konyak were found dead with tell-tale signs of wounds caused by impact of the explosion while five other soldiers were found wounded with bullet injury marks.
One bullet hit subedar N Haokip on his right hand while rifleman Sikinder sustained two bullet injuries, one on his right hand and another on his right leg. Rifleman Anish Kumar suffered a bullet injury on his right leg while havildar Nitul Sharma has a bullet injury on his right hand. Rifleman Sandeep Kumar sustained bullet injury on his shoulder. A search operation was conducted after the fire-fight with additional security forces but there is no report of making any arrest.
Meanwhile, bodies of slain soldiers have been brought to JNIMS morgue for post mortem while all the injured personnel are undergoing treatment at 4 AR battalion headquarters.
