Situation grim as local transmission cases reach 280
IMPHAL, 28th Jul: Two doctors of RIMS including a professor, a lab technician of the hospital, an employee of secretariat horticulture section and four staffers of a private clinic in Thoubal district were among the new cases of local transmission detected on Tuesday as the number of locally transmitted cases surged to 280 out of the 2317 total confirmed cases in the state.
Thoubal district has 143 cases of local transmission while Jiribam has 56. Numbers of locally transmitted cases are also rising rapidly in Churachandpur and Imphal West districts which now have 42 and 25 such cases respectively, as per data maintained by The People’s Chronicle. At least 34 cases are among healthcare workers and related officials including 12 nurses, 10 doctors, five lab technicians, three ward attendants, two NHM officials, one UDC and another staff whose post could not be ascertained. At least 12 per cent of the total confirmed cases are local transmission cases. However, these figures may differ from the actual one since the government withholds such statistical data from making them public.
Meanwhile, doctors’ quarters of JNIMS hospital has been sealed after a resident of the quarters, who serves as a nurse at RIMS hospital was found positive of Covid-19 on Monday. The entire residents of the quarters will be tested on Wednesday.
In Churachandpur district, 38 new cases were detected of which 31 cases are from inside the 113 battalion BSF camp, as per report filed by our Churachandpur correspondent. With this, the total number of COVID-19 positive patients in the district has spiked to 228. Seven of the new cases are among the inmates of Saikot ITI Quarantine centre. Positive cases in the BSF camp have reached 55 as of Tuesday. With the rapid rise in fresh cases among the BSF personnel, the Gangpimual STC/BSF camp has become a hotspot.
Fortunately, all those who visited Advanced Diagnostic Centre, whose names were listed during the contact tracing exercise have tested negative.
As per statement released by CCR, 31 fresh cases (24 male & 7 female) were detected in the past 24 hours at the VRDLs of RIMS (10), DHs of Thoubal (4), Churachanpdur (8), Tamenglong (8) and Mobile Testing Team Imphal West (1). They belong to the districts of Imphal West (5), Churachandpur (8), Thoubal (10), and Tamenglong (8). Except for one from Imphal West and eight from Tamenglong the remaining 22 cases do not have known travel history but have local risk history. All necessary measures like containment and contact tracing are in place, the statement said.
It also informed that 56 patients were discharged from RIMS (4), CCCs of Meitram (12), Ukhrul (9), Senapati (23), Thoubal (5), and RD Wing (3) after they were found negative on RT PCR test. However, the authority continues to withhold district specific information for reasons best known to them.
As per the statement, the cumulative number of positive cases has reached 2317 and those of active and recovered cases are 702 and 1615 respectively. The recovery rate has improved to 69.70 per cent. Rate of infection has increased to 447 case per million while test rate has improved to 25,976 test per million population. At least 2.59 per cent of the state’s population have been tested till date.
On the other hand, a late report said that a senior professor, a young lady doctor and a lab technician were found positive during test conducted for RIMS staff on Tuesday. The senior professor is said to be from Thangmeiband area while the lady doctor is assigned duties at RIMS flu clinic and she has been staying at RIMS ladies hostel. The lab technician is from Khongnang Pheidekpi area under Singjamei police station. An employee of secretariat horticulture section was also tested positive. The employee is a resident of Langol area and he might have contracted the virus from his wife, who is a nurse at RIMS hospital and was tested positive for Covid-19 earlier.
A rifleman of 1st Manipur Rifles along with his wife and child has also confirmed positive for Covid-19. He reportedly visited Shija Hospitals to seek medical attention for some ailment but was found positive there during the mandatory RAT test conducted prior to entering the main compound of the hospital.
In Thoubal district, four employees of a private clinic located at Wangjing, which include two nurses, one helper and family member of a doctor, tested positive among 22 new cases, as per late report. Of them, one positive result was found at the district hospital and six at mobile testing centre set up at Khekman where 110 samples were tested on Tuesday. The remaining 15 cases were detected at RIMS VRDL.
