IMPHAL, 18th Jul: Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) Arvind Kumar shot himself in his office premises on Saturday afternoon. He was rushed to Raj Medicity, where he is responding to treatment.
Police sources said that the incident occurred in his office chamber located inside the campus of 1st Manipur Rifles on Saturday around 1 pm. Shortly before the incident, the police officer had chaired a meeting with officers of different ranks of the state police department. Moreover, he met with some senior officers in relation with his new posting as ADGP (LO) earlier during the day.
Upon hearing a gunshot from inside his office, his staffer ran inside and found the door closed from inside. The staffers forced entry into the office room and found the officer lying injured. One bullet could be spotted entering his under chin and exiting close to his left ear. He was soon rushed to Raj Medicity by his staff members.
Chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu, DGP LM Khaute, senior officers of police and civil services went to the hospital and met his wife who also rushed there on receiving information.
Speaking to the media, chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu said that ADGP Arvind Kumar is responding to treatment and his condition is stable now. There is some blood clotting inside his head and it will need surgery to remove them. Necessary arrangements have been made to take him to Delhi for the surgery once his condition improves, he said and added that the ADGP is out of danger as of now. He also said that they are not aware of the reason behind such drastic action taken up by the senior officer.
On the other hand, a highly placed source said that the authority is planning to evacuate the senior officer by a special air ambulance once his condition improves.
Sources from Raj Medicity said that doctors have conducted surgery successfully. Luckily, his brain was not damaged severely but a stent has been inserted to drain fluids as some eye nerves and parts of his eye were damage in the incident.
He is now being kept at ICU for observation and there is no serious complication as of now.
Mention may be made that Arvind Kumar, a 1992 batch Manipur cadre IPS officer, had returned to Manipur police earlier this year, after remaining as joint director at the Intelligence Bureau on deputation for several years. After returning to the state, he held the post of ADGP (Armed Police) and was transferred to his present post only on July 5 by an order of chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu.
