AR recovers Rs. 12 lakh cash, cigarettes
IMPHAL, 6th Jul: Troops of Assam Rifles recovered huge quantity of cash and imported cigarettes in two different incidents while conducting regular vehicle check at Mobile Check Post, Sita on July 5.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that on July 5 around 6:30 pm, troops of AR stopped an individual who was carrying rice bag on his Kenbo bike. On thorough checking, bundles of cash amounting to Rs 21 lakh were found hidden inside the rice bag.
The individual, identified as Khulpuwa Moshil (27) s/o Khulpuwa Konai of Pallel was carrying the cash from Heirok to Khampang Khunou.
In another incident , based on specific input, team of Assam Rifles intercepted a Maruti Suzuki Swift bearing registration number MN 01AK 2904 driven by one Oinam Chakrabarti Singh (31) of Thoubal around 5 pm.
While carrying out a thorough check of the vehicle, 5400 packets of imported cigarettes were recovered. The cigarettes were being transported without valid permit or documents.
Due to the COVID 19 lockdown, people of NE as well as insurgent groups are facing financial trouble. The drug dealers and insurgents have resorted to using unsuspecting tribal population and making them conduit in lure of petty returns to further their nefarious designs, the PRO said, adding that insurgents have resorted to extortion from locals to compensate for their depleting finances in view of lock down.
The recovered items along with the detainees have been handed over to Tengnoupal Police Station and the Superintendent of Customs Protection Force, Pallel for further legal action, the PRO added.
