MEELAL demands Language Act amendment
IMPHAL, 14th Dec:
Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has demanded the government to amend the Manipur Official Language Act to rectify the clause ‘written in Bengali script’ as ‘written in Meetei Mayek script’ and to adopt the same by the state cabinet for passing a relevant legislation during the upcoming winter assembly session. Issuing a statement in this regard, MEELAL secretary general Gaishinglung Pamei hailed Chief Minister N Biren for making it possible for the students reading in colleges to study Manipuri language in Meetei Mayek rather than the Bengali script. He further appreciated the new government for taking up initiative for amending the Manipur Official Language Act and appreciated the suggestion for changing the phrase ‘written in Bengali script’ with ‘written in Meetei or Meitei Mayek script’. However, the association demanded the government to recognise the official language of the state as ‘Meeteilol’ and the script as ‘Meetei Mayek’ as mentioned in the "Manipur Gazette No 1/2/78-SS/E – Please read ‘Meetei’ for ‘Meitei’ in the government orders of even dated April 16, 1980."
