ASI tests Covid-19 positive, 26 fresh cases detected
IMPHAL, 1st Jul: Manipur reported the first Covid-19 positive case amongst its Police personnel with one Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) posted at Jiribam Police Station getting infected.
Subsequent to confirmation of the infection, Jiribam DC W Malemnganba Chenglei has issued an order notifying three areas in the district including Jiribam Police Station as containment zones.
Till the time of filing this report there was no confirmation on how the said police officer got infected. He was directly involved in screening of returnees who came to the state through special trains and sending them to their respective district quarantine centres.
It is informed that on April 21, the ASI went to a private hospital at Silchar where his wife was admitted for child delivery and revisited the hospital on May 19 for check-up of his wife and new-born child.
After undergoing home quarantine following the latest visit to Silchar, he recently joined duty.
However, two-three days back he started feeling unwell and had a Covid-19 test done and the result came out positive on June 30 night.
Immediately, after he was diagnosed as Covid-19 positive, he was taken to Jiribam District Hospital and from there on Wednesday, he was brought to Covid Care Centre in Imphal by an ambulance.
With the police officer getting infected, test samples have been collected from all the people working with him in close quarter and his family as well as of all the police personnel of Jiribam Police Station. According to information received from the district’s medical authorities, a total of 180 samples of people, including medical personnel, believed to have had contacts with the ASI have been collected so far for testing.
On the other hand, Jiribam DC W Malemnganba Chenglei issued an order on Wednesday declaring three areas in the district headquarters including Jiribam Police Station as containment zones. According to the order, no one is allowed to enter or exit the containment zones, geographical areas of the zones have been sealed with initiation of active surveillance of Covid-19. Anyone found violating the order will be punished under Section 188 of IPC and Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The containment zones include Kadamtala, where his wife’s parental home is located; Babupara Ward No 5 the ASI’s residential area; and the Jiribam Police Station, his work place.
On the other-hand, with 26 more fresh cases (15 male and 11 female) detected in the last 24 hours, the total number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 has reached 1260 in the state while the number of discharged patients reached 579 with 26 people discharged on Wednesday leaving the number of active cases to 681.
Of the 26 new cases, 11 are from Senapati, six from Kamjong, three from Ukhrul, two each from Tamenglong & Thoubal, and one each from Imphal West and Jiribam.
A CCR statement said that all of them are returnees from other states.
Meanwhile, one patient from CCC Ukhrul and 25 from RIMS were discharged on Wednesday after their test results came negative. With Wednesday’s discharge, recovery rate in the state has improved further to 45.95 per cent.
Status report shared by IDSP informed that 612 tests were conducted at RIMS (238) and JNIMS (370) in the last 24 hours. The cumulative number of tests conducted till date is 51,606. Currently, 7,703 individuals are kept under quarantine which include 34 persons under home quarantine, 1891 in institutional facilities, 5393 in community QCs and 385 in paid quarantine centres.
Altogether 967 truckers and 779 commuters including 738 flight passengers were screened for Covid symptoms at the entry points at Mao, Jiribam and Imphal Airport.
On the other hand, DC Thoubal has lifted containment measures imposed at Kodompokpi Sports Complex, Gallery Block-C(1) at Wangjing after all the inmates have been found negative and discharged.
