Government decides to enhance testing capacity
IMPHAL, 23rd May: With the continuous arrival of state natives, Chief Minster N Biren held discussion with government officials and health authorities for increasing the testing capacity of Covid-19 at RIMS and JNIMS on Saturday.
Discussing several measures for tackling the present Covid-19 crisis, Chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu, Principal secretary to Chief Minister who is also principal secretary health Vumlunmang Vualnam, RIMS director Dr A Santa, JNIMS director Dr Th Bhimo, superintendents of the two hospitals, officials of Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development and health services officials attended the meeting.
The discussion primarily focused on lack of equipment and manpower in the two hospitals for testing the massive inflow of native returnees.
Even though around 800-900 samples of the returnees are being collected on a daily basis, not more than 200 samples each for the two hospitals can be tested. The pandemic could be contained effectively by testing the returnees at the earliest.
As per the protocol, necessary steps for the returnees could be processed only after getting the test results and as such meeting stressed the need to ensure the returnees are not made to wait in the quarantine centres for long.
In the wake of daily average arrival of over 1000 returnees, the discussion between CM and officials concerned decided to procure necessary equipment for the two hospitals for increasing the testing capacity.
Considering the possibility of making COVID-19 testing equipment from TB testing machines through necessary modification, the meeting minutely discussed for utilizing the equipment used in district hospitals.
