CHANDEL, 14th May: Two ladies were injured in a firing incident that took place at Chandel around 3:30 pm on Thursday.
The victims have been identified as St Janghring (Jahring) Anal (47), daughter of St Mono of Lambung village and Shanti (40), wife of KL Riingam of Lambung village under Chandel Police Station.
Following the incident and escalation of tension, a team of Chandel District Police and Manipur Rifles was despatched to the site of the incident which was followed by SDO Chandel, DC Chandel and SP Chandel rushing to the area managing to bring the situation under control.
According to an FIR lodged with Chandel Police officer in-charge, around 3:30 pm Thursday about 50-60 villagers of Lambung were returning home from their Jhum cultivation field opposite to United College through a hillside track opposite to Mantri Pantha village. After crossing ‘Prayer Mount’ located within Mantri Pantha village, some people numbering about 10-20, suspected to be Mantri Pantha village chief and his villagers, armed with barrel guns started firing several rounds indiscriminately towards the Lambung natives during which St Janghring (Jahring) and Shanti sustained injuries.
Janghring was injured on her head and right arm while Shanti sustained injuries on her stomach. Both were immediately rushed to district hospital, with Janghring discharged after first aid. It may be mentioned that the two neighbouring villages Lambung and Mantri Pantha have a record of dispute in the past over ownership of land and Lambung villagers started their cultivation work after obtaining an order from High Court of Manipur on May 13.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Chandel has imposed curfew in both villages and surrounding areas.
