Refund bus fares: DESAM, AIMS

IMPHAL, 4th May: While appreciating the arrangement made by the government for inter-state transportation of stranded state natives and risks taken by bus drivers and handymen in transporting 84 people from Guwahati, Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) have appealed to the government to bear bus fare expenditure and return the bus fares charged from each passenger. In a statement, DESAM publicity and propaganda secretary Sh Rishikumar lauded the service rendered by the drivers and handymen of the buses which brought back 84 stranded persons from Guwahati but expressed unhappiness over charging Rs 3000 from each passenger.
At present all the people of the state and particularly who remained stranded outside the state are facing financial constraint due to the ongoing lockdown. So, it should be the sole responsibility of the state government to make proper arrangement for bringing back all the stranded Manipuris from other states even by bearing their travelling fares, stated Rishikumar.
While appreciating the initiatives taken up by some MLAs who financed money from their pockets for transportation of stranded individuals of their respective ACs, the student bodies urged the MLAs/Ministers to extend all possible help from their side for transportation of stranded Manipuris who are stuck at different parts of the country regardless of the constituencies.
As such, the student bodies appealed to utilise the Covid-19 Relief Fund for bearing the travelling fares of the Manipuris stranded outside the state.
Meanwhile, a group of 20 stranded individuals, all from Thangmeiband assembly constituency, left Guwahati for Imphal on Monday around 5 pm in a bus sent by Thangmeiband Kendra Relief Committee under the aegis of MLA Kh Joykisan.
Sources said that the bus will be arriving in Imphal on Tuesday morning after which they will probably be taken and kept in a quarantine facility until confirmation of their health condition. The relief committee is bearing all the cost for evacuating the stranded individuals.
