Seized betel leaves disposed

IMPHAL, 2nd May : A consignment of 20 baskets of betel leaves that were seized from a Tata Truck on April 20 were disposed of at Lamdeng Solid Waste Management Plant on Saturday, in accordance with Court orders. Speaking in this regard, Lamphel PS OC Th Manihar informed that the betel leaves were seized from a truck, bearing registration no. WB 11B 7846, during a frisking operation carried out at Lamphel Sanakeithel area on April 20 evening. A case was registered for lockdown violation and for transportation of non-essential items during the lockdown, thereby increasing the chances of spreading COVID-19. Two persons were also arrested for transporting the items. They were later produced before the Duty Magistrate, Imphal West, which granted them bail. On April 30, the Duty Magistrate also ordered for disposing the betel leaves on April 30, following which the leaves were disposed on Saturday, he added. The IO of the case, L Premjit Singh was also present during the disposal of the leaves.
