MPCB monitors pollution levels
IMPHAL, 25th Apr: Keeping in view of the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19, and the subsequent improvement in environment during the lockdown period, Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has begun monitoring noise and air pollution levels in Imphal and its surrounding areas from Friday onwards.
An MPCB team monitored air quality and noise level at Keishampat junction on Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. MPCB AEE M Bangajit, who led the team, told The People’s Chronicle that they had already monitored the air quality and noise level of the location during normal time and high noise level along with bad air quality were found in the result.
Now, vehicular traffic has been reduced significantly due to the lockdown and there is no public gathering. With almost all major activities contributing to pollution have been put on hold, it is worth monitoring the air quality and noise level during the lockdown period so as to make comparative study, he said.
He also conveyed that they will take up similar exercise at Singjamei parking, Nupilal complex, Nagamapal, Wahengbam Leikai and Kalimai temple gate in the days to come after which the samples will be examined in the lab for comparative study.
