UKHRUL, 21st Apr: Chingai MLA Khashim Vashum has risen to the occasion, once again, in easing the 'food stress' among the people of the three sub-divisional blocks under Chingai Assembly Constituency during the ongoing lockdown to contain COVID-19 pandemic.
Towards this objective, MLA Khashim Vashum formally launched the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) with Chingai sub-divisional block as the first beneficiary target in the presence of Chingai SDO Nimmi Khamrang and Ukhrul SDO CH Huileng at his Hamleikhong residence in Ukhrul town on Tuesday.
In view of the growing public concern over food security amid extended nationwide lockdown, the MLA initiated the move under the open market sale scheme to help mitigate the prevailing food concerns among the people in Chingai AC.
"As a gift, I am giving away a packet of salt and a face mask to each of the households, in addition to the discount on rice", Khashim told The People's Chronicle on the sidelines of the bustling open market.
"Chingai sub-divisional block has been chosen as the first target today and then it will be Lungchong Maiphai block, to be followed by Jessami block", said Chingai SDO Khamrang, under whose supervision the sale exercise was done.
"Each of the beneficiaries is advised to bring a copy of their Aadhaar document as a proof of their identity and domicile", she informed. An equal quantity of 10 kg of rice was sold/provided at a subsidised rate of Rs 25/kg to each of the households under the scheme. According to the sales operators, some 570 households, including those coming from different villages under the block, availed the benefits of the open market facility. Hundreds had formed several serpentine queues as early as 10 am for the open market that opened at 11 am. Circled marks could be seen in front of the shop to maintain the social distancing rules. However, at some points, the police had to remind the people repeatedly to follow the rules, as they tended to huddle up with more and more people joining the queue by midday.
