Cross border movement worries BJP leader

IMPHAL, 19th Apr: BJP leader HS Benjamin Mate, who also contested the recent Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket, appealed to the people of Tengnoupal and Chandel districts to refrain from any activities which could violate the lockdown measures taken up by the government.
In a public appeal, the BJP leader said that while the steps being taken up by the government under the leadership of CM Biren and prompt action of sealing border by the DCs of Tengnoupal and Chandel districts are appreciated, there are reports of cross border movement of people in unmanned border areas, which is a huge concern.
He then appealed to all concerned to refrain from any such cross border activities, violating the lockdown measures considering the rising number of COVID-19 positive cases in Myanmar. He assured that livelihood needs for the people of the state will be addressed promptly. He also urged CSOs and village chiefs to take proactive role in preventing such cross border movements and activities.
Meanwhile, Hill Tribal Council (HTC) thanked Benjamin Mate for providing 5 kg of rice and potatoes to 1000 households in Moreh town on Friday.
Amid the BJP leaders expressing deep concern over possible intrusion of unauthorised persons into Manipur on the Moreh side of the international boundary, Jiribam Police on Saturday apprehended 16 people including a minor who were caught entering the state secretly amid the lockdown over COVID-19.
According to a statement released by SP of Jiribam District Police, the group including 6 women and 1 minor was crossing Barak river stealthily to enter the state when they were apprehended by the patrol team of Borobekra PS at around 8 pm Saturday.
During verification, it was found that the group was originally from Kaisom Punji village in Borobekra sub-division, Manipur. They had been staying at Saiphai village in Mizoram for some time, and had returned to Manipur trekking the hill terrain. Borobekra police station has registered an FIR against the 16 people and produced them before the Judicial Magistrate on Sunday, which granted them bail with specific instructions that they be quarantined for 14 days, the statement conveyed.
