Windstorm leaves trail of destruction across state
IMPHAL, 17th Apr: The windstorm that swept across the state on April 15 and Friday morning have left a trail of destruction with various structures, agricultural farms and private house damaged irreparably.
As per reports received here the gale caused severe destruction to Kangchup Chiru Government UJB School located under Kangpokpi District, damaging classroom, furniture and blackboards.
In a press statement, chairman of school board JD Thonsing Chiru informed that the strong windstorm which hit Kangchup area on Wednesday early morning caused severe damage to at least 3 classrooms of the school, destroying furniture and blackboards. The chairman also urged the Government to carry out inspection of the school complex and take up necessary measures for repairing the damages.
Several houses have also been blown away at Torbung and Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district while the storm uprooted trees near Mission Ground, Ukhrul and blew away the roofs of several houses near Wino Bazaar in Ukhrul district and Kadangband Mayai Leikai areas of Imphal West district.
There are also reports about many houses in areas under Kwakta Municipal Council by the windstorm that swept across the state from 3 am to 5:30 am on Friday.
It may be mentioned that due to last year’s storm which damaged numerous houses, many families are still living in temporary structures as they cannot rebuild their houses due to lack of relief assistance from the government.
The windstorm followed by rainfall also blew away rooftops of many houses on top of causing destruction to vegetables growing in Nambol, Oinam, Bishnupur, Moirang, Thanga and Kumbi areas.
At Kwakta, the windstorm caused destruction to Sericulture Office Quarter building and a shop in Keinou. Due to the ongoing lockdown, local people are facing problems in buying materials for repairing their houses or shop.
