Betel leaves, Zarda seized; burned

IMPHAL, 17th Apr: Local club and Meira Paibi members of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai seized three baskets of betel leaves and four boxes of Zarda (chewing tobacco), which were brought hidden among food materials, and made a bonfire of the seized items publicly on Friday.
The betel leaves and Zarda were found inside a truck bearing registration number MN01A 1829 when members of Peace, Humanity and Labour Youth Club (PHLYO), Ima Panthoibi Welfare Youth Centre, and local Meira Paibi organisations checked the truck around 7.30 am Friday. The truck belongs to one Krishna from Bihar but presently staying at Telipati.
Sources said that Krishna has a rented storehouse at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai, which belongs to one Oinam Tombi. The truck arrived at about 5 pm on Thursday and started unloading the consignment. Suspicious over the way labourers unloaded the contents from the truck, local people went to the storehouse on Friday morning and seized the betel leaves and Zarda.
