Hired labourers falsely depicted as illegally entered migrants
IMPHAL, 10th Apr: A video, which recently went viral claiming that migrants were being brought into the state hidden inside carton boxes, has turned out to be false. The migrants shown in the video were, in reality, non-Manipuri labourers from Telipati, who had been hired to unload the boxes.
However, all 15 labourers and an owner of a warehouse in Uripok Khoisnam Leikai have been arrested by police for flouting the lockdown guidelines.
According to a police report, a driver along with his handyman arrived at Imphal on April 8 with eggs from Andhra Pradesh. Both of them underwent medical tests and other formalities at ISBT and then spent the night at ISBT.
On Thursday, they went to unload some of the carton boxes containing eggs at a private warehouse in Imphal East District, for which they hired 15 non-Manipuri labourers from Telipati. They then proceeded to unload some more of the carton boxes at a warehouse in Uripok Khoisnam Leikai, during which they were filmed by someone and the whole video was made to look like as if migrants had been brought to the state hidden inside the carton boxes.
Immediately, the police conducted a verification of the 15 non-Manipuri labourers, the driver, handyman and the warehouse owner in the presence of the executive magistrate and detained all of them. An FIR was registered against the 15 labourers (13 of whom held inner line permits) and the godown owner for flouting the lockdown guidelines. However, the driver and the hanydman were released, the report informed.
