Family harassed as locals suspect youth to be Covid-19 positive

IMPHAL, 10th Apr: A minor girl was physically assaulted by locals of Langathel Mayai Leikai during a tussle between her family members and the local people who asked them to leave their home on the ground that her brother is suspected of being infected by the contagious Coronavirus.
The incident took place on April 5 at about 8 pm at the residence of the victim.
According to Organisation for Indian Women Against Crimes secretary A Robita Leima, the victim’s mother conveyed that her son who is a truck driver returned home from Assam and he was reported to be suffering from dental aches and has been staying at Patsoi, the residence of his truck owner. As such, he has asked the family members to take him home but the family members could not arrange any vehicle as the local people have spread rumours that her son is infected by Coronavirus. On top of that, a large mob of Langathel locals including women threatened the family members to leave the locality in case the family is determined to bring him home.
During a tussle between the locals and the family members, 15-year old sister of the truck driver was assaulted on her private parts by some people including two male, said the victim’s mother when she visited the organisation’s office at Canchipur on Friday to register a complaint.
It was also reported, the truck driver tested negative and at present the minor girl is suffering from depression and she has been admitted to RIMS for treatment. Following the complaint, the organisation has decided to take up a legal action against the perpetrators. The organisation has appealed to public not to give harassment to anyone but to extend support in combating the pandemic virus.
