AMSU reaches out to Loktak settlers

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 8th Apr: The Mangal Task Force of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), which was formed to help the people during the lockdown over COVID-19, has extended assistance to the villagers of Langolsabi Champu Khangpok, a floating village in the middle of Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district.
According to a statement issued by AMSU publicity & information secretary Lhunpao Lupheng, the village is located at an hour’s distance from Loktak project by boat. The main livelihood of the 280 households is fishing. However, the villagers are facing immense hardships due to the lockdown over COVID-19, especially considering that it is located in the middle of the lake.
On receiving news of the plight of the village, the task force on Wednesday distributed essential food items to the villagers, which were procured with the donations made to relief fund, ‘Meeyamgi Tengbang’. However, the task force discovered that the village is yet to receive its share of the free rice, which is being distributed by the state government.
In addition, the village has only one school, which was built by the villagers, and enrolment is up to only Class III. Only two teachers from the village itself are teaching the students. As such, the student union appealed to the state government to look into the matter after the outbreak is taken under control, as this will bring a ray of hope to the village.
