Mirabai Chanu, who is employed with the Indian Railways, lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk to total an impressive 194kg in the women’s 48kg, in the process setting a new national record and becoming the first Indian in over two decades to claim gold in the tournament.
“India is proud of Mirabai Chanu, who has won a gold at the World Weightlifting Championship. Congratulations and best wishes for her future endeavours,” PM Modi wrote on his twitter handle.
The President’s Office said in a tweet, “Congratulations Mirabai Chanu for winning a gold medal in the World Weightlifting Championship. India is so proud of you. And congratulations Manipur for giving the country such a wonderful series of champion sportswomen!”
Seeing the tricolour from the podium, tears of joy rolled down her cheeks, as Chanu picked up a rare honour for an Indian at the marquee event.
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was also prompt in congratulating Chanu. “Saikhom Mirabai Chanu wins #Gold in 2017 IWF Senior Men & Women #weightlifting championships in Anaheim, USA. In his congratulatory message, chief minister N Biren said that the whole state feels proud of Mirabai.
“This feat has once again proved to the world that Manipur is the sports powerhouse of India and the state can be taken as the sports capital of the country,” Biren said.
Expressing hope that the star weightlifter would bring more laurels to the country and the state, the CM conveyed his best wishes in her future career and competitions.
Youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip also conveyed congratulations to Mirabai on breaking India's two-decade jinx as she won Gold at the World Weightlifting Championships.
“It was a moment of pride for the country and Manipur in particular to see one of our sisters make history in weightlifting,” Letpao Haokip said.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event of Kuki Sporting Club at Indoor Hall, Khuman Lampak, Letpao said Manipur truly deserves the epithet ‘sports hub’ of the country given the many sports stars it produces in almost every sporting discipline.
The minister exuded confidence that the spectacular achievement of Mirabai Chanu— who sets the sky as the limit after a previous disappointing performance — would be an inspiration to many sportspersons of the state who are in line to make it big.
Information and public relations minister Thongam Biswajit also has congratulated the star weightlifter on her achievement.
In his message, the minister, who is also the government spokesperson, said the feat is impressive as Mirabai’s win has ended a medal drought of more than two decades for India at the world championship. Before her, Karnam Malleswari won the world title in the 54 kg division in 1994 and 1995.
