Fake news under CID’s scanner

 IMPHAL, 3rd Apr: In pursuance of the orders of the Supreme Court on March 31, SP CID (CB) has directed all concerned to refrain from spreading unverified/fake news on social media or otherwise in view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and to spread awareness on fake news among their families and acquaintances. 

A circular issued on Friday stated that anyone found indulging in such activities are liable to be prosecuted under appropriate sections of law Including section 54 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Further, the officers and men of Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS), under the supervision of additional SP CID (CB) and OC of the CCPS N John shall monitor all social media platforms for any fake/unsubstantiated news regarding COVID-19 which could have law and order ramifications and submit a report daily, the circular added.
