Union minister pats state for exemplary power reforms

Even as Union Minister of state for Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh applauded concerted efforts of the Government of Manipur towards realising the goal of ‘power to all’, chief minister N Biren has pledged to galvanise all available resource to ensure every household in the state receives uninterrupted electricity supply.
Describing Manipur as the ‘fastest reforming state’ in power sector in the country, RK Singh, who launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya Scheme) at Hotel Classic Grande here on Tuesday, said that without the development in power sector the aspiration for accelerating development and industrialisation in Manipur will be elusive.
Further stating that it is the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide electricity to every household of the country, he expressed confidence that with the launch of Saubhagya Scheme the government’s cherished dream of providing affordable electricity to all homes, including the poorest of the poor would be realised.
Highlighting the centre’s vision to provide uninterrupted power supply by March 2019, RK Singh maintained efforts are on to achieve the goal before the stipulated period by engaging private companies to accelerate requisite process and focus on infrastructure development.
He also assured that the Ministry of Power would provide necessary financial assistance for strengthening and improvement of infrastructure in the power sector in Manipur. The Government of India had already extended monetary assistance for procuring of transformers, power meters, etc. to strengthen the power sector in the state, he added.
In his address at the launch function, chief minister N Biren Singh said that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ‘Saubhagya Scheme’ would transform the lives, especially poorest of the poor by providing power supply to every household of the country.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the power supply has improved to a large extent especially after corporatisation of the erstwhile Electricity Department into Transmission Company and Distribution Company. He said that Saubhagya scheme would provide power supply to the remaining un-electrified households to achieve universal household electrification in the country.
Stating that emphasis of the scheme would be towards covering households in the hill districts of the state which are yet to be electrified, Biren said that the government would strive to ensure power connectivity to these families free of cost.
While conveying that the state government has so far electrified 972 Census villages under various plans of Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and 1,442 census villages under state plan, the CM said that under the National Solar Mission, Manipur has been allocated an installation target of 105 MV solar power by 2022.
Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a legendary leader, Biren said that the initiatives and schemes undertaken under his leadership to uplift the deprived and downtrodden people of the country is purely done on ‘human service’ to bring smiles on the face of every citizen in the country. “We feel proud when we see people happy,” he said, adding that the government is committed to work for the welfare of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, minister for power Th Biswajit Singh highlighted that the government has successfully electrified 90 per cent households in urban areas and 60 per cent in rural areas of the state. The un-electrified 1.76 lakh households would get power connection under the Saubhagya scheme, he added.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring the benefits to the needy and poor people of the country, he also announced that the Ministry of Power has already agreed to provide financial support towards fulfilling the dreams of the needy people to get power supply in their homes.
Minister Biswajit further called upon officials of MSPDCL, MANIREDA to work hard to fulfil the aspirations of the Prime Minister.
During the function, dignitaries present interacted with beneficiaries of the scheme in four districts - Senapati, Churachandpur, Noney and Chandel, through live video conferencing. On the occasion, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) and Ukhrul District Community Resource Management Society (UDCRMS), a district unit of North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS) for the construction of multipurpose hall cum indoor stadium at Somdal village, Ukhrul district.
REC executive director Shakil P Ahmed, joint secretary of Ministry of Power AK Verma and officials of MSPDCL also attended the function.
