Student bodies condemn politics during rice distribution for Covid-19
Imphal, March 28: Three student bodies All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) and Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) while welcoming the government’s decision to provide 20 kg of rice to every household free of cost during the lockdown period, accused some MLAs of indulging in politics and not giving the allotted quantity of rice to people during its distribution.
According to a joint release of ANSAM, AIMS and DESAM, the student bodies received complaints from many people that their intimations to the rice distributors were not entertained as the latter insisted that the rice is being distributed as per the directive of the MLA concerned.
In case the MLAs do not distribute the allotted rice to the people as announced by the chief minister within five days, the three student bodies will expose the MLAs, it cautioned.
The release further noted that the rice distribution which is being done based on voters’ list of the constituency concerned is also causing serious inconvenience to many people who are staying at rented quarters or other accommodation as they are excluded from the list of beneficiaries. One of the most affected sections are students staying at rent in Imphal who have come from far flung areas and are not able to return home due to the lockdown, noted the bodies.
The student bodies appealed to the chief minister to include such students among the beneficiaries of the government’s endeavour to distribute essential items if they possess valid Aadhaar card, voter card or identity card issued by their respective institutions.
The student bodies also informed that they have formed a joint grievance cell for students who are living in rented accommodation if they face any issues during the government lockdown to stop Covid-19 outbreak. Those in distress may contact mobile numbers 8974710045, 7005606920 and 8729955052 for necessary assistance, the student organisations informed and added that the complaints received will be placed before the government authorities to solve the same at the earliest possible.
