ECI postpones Rajya Sabha elections

IMPHAL, 24th Mar: In view of spread of Coronavirus and subsequent lockdown across the country, Election Commission of India (ECI) has postponed the elections to fill up 55 seats in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) of Parliament indefinitely.

The elections to Rajya Sabha to fill up 55 seats for 17 states were earlier scheduled for March 26, but the ECI issued a notification Tuesday postponing the same for an indefinite period.

Accordingly, Manipur Legislative Assembly’s assistant returning officer Rohit Sapam has also issued a notification postponing the biennial election to the lone seat of Council of State, Manipur-2020 in view of COVID-18 fear.

Three candidates filed their nomination papers till the last day of filing of nomination on March 13.

They are Leishemba Sanajaoba of BJP, former MLA Tongbram Mangibabu of Indian National Congress (INC) and Honreikhui Kashung of Naga People’s Front (NPF). However, Honreikhui Kashung withdrew his nomination on the last day of withdrawal of nomination on March 18.

Of the total 55 seats to be filled up through the election, 37 seats of 10 states have already been declared elected unopposed and elections for the remaining 18 seats are to be held in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Rajasthan and Manipur.
