‘Statements of Police PRO totally baseless’
MOREH, 16th Mar: L Phunchong village chief Tongkhopao Haokip has contended that the statement made by Manipur Police PRO regarding the March 13 incident was full of baseless lies.
Speaking at a press meet held at the office of Hill Tribal Council Moreh on Sunday, chief Tongkhopao claimed that the incident happened when a commando team stationed near L Phunchong village side of the Integrated Check Post in the name of performing duty was extorting money from people bringing ‘Yongchak’ and other items. During that time, a car coming from Laijingphai village was ordered to stop by the commando team.
Due to inconvenience of parking, the car drove for some distance to park but the commando team chased it and assaulted the driver at gunpoint, thus resulting in a scuffle between them and car driver and the person traveling in the same car, he recalled.
Tongkhopao asserted that the press release issued by the Police PRO brushed aside the main incident and emphasised on the incident that happened in Moreh Hospital to cover up the misdeeds of the commandos. Hill Tribal Council Moreh president Ginkhosei Lhungdim, who was present during the press conference as a representative of Kuki CSOs, lamented that Tengnoupal deputy commissioner has taken no initiative to talk with civil society organisations to ease down the tensions and bring back normalcy in the border town.
