STAFF REPORTER/DIPR IMPHAL, 19th Nov: With the state government all set to host the first ever North East Development Summit (NEDS) 2017 at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound here on November 21 and 22, chief minister N Biren has informed that around 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) will be signed between the state government and national and international companies/investors in the areas of constructions and other skill development works.
Addressing media persons at the cabinet hall of the CM’s secretariat on Sunday, Biren said that the primary objective of organising the summit is to showcase the existing economic potential and attract investors in sectors like food processing industry, bamboo industry, fisheries, real estate, etc. To make the summit a grand success, the CM called upon media houses/professionals to play positive and constructive role towards achieving economic development in the state. Preparation for Manipur Sangai Festival 2017 is almost complete, he said.
The chief minister also sought the support and co-operation of the general public to make the upcoming North East Development Summit a grand success.
“We should not create any inconvenience and trouble to the tourists and visitors from the country and abroad.” Disclosing that altogether 175 delegates will be participating in the summit, CM Biren stated that the summit will be attended by Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Suresh Prabhu, Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, India Foundation director Ram Madhav, Vice-Chairman NITI Ayaog Rajeev Kumar, Ministers and officials from NE states, Ambassadors, High Commissioners and officials from various countries including Malaysia, China, Japan, Sweden, Taiwan, etc.
Around 36 companies/firms from India will be participating in addition to associations like FICCI, CII, NASSCOM, Border Trade Moreh, Myanmar India Business Chamber, India Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce etc. Among others, United Nations Resident Co-ordinator Yuri Afanasiev and High Commissioner of Malaysia Dato Hidayat Abdul Hamid will also attend the summit.
The chief minister further informed that the first ever North East Development Summit 2017 will be formally inaugurated by President of India Ram Nath Kovind on November 21 at 2 pm.
Mention may be made here that the NEDS 2017 is to be hosted jointly by Government of Manipur, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India and India Foundation. Chief Secretary RR Rashmi, Additional Chief Secretary Dr J Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary Vineet Joshi and Vice-Chairman of Manipur Infrastructure Development Agency (MIDA) M Asnikumar were also present during the press conference.
