CHRONICLE BUREAU IMPHAL, 13th Nov: Manipur Police Sports Club-A and X-Polo Club swept their way to the semifinals of the N Hazari & Dr N Tombi State Polo Tournament, with easy wins over their respective opponents on Monday.
A strong showing in the fourth chukker steered Manipur Police Sports Club-A to a thumping 9-2 victory over Chingkheihunba Polo Club-A in their quarterfinal encounter.
MPSC-A faced a stiff resistance from their opponents in the first two chukkers, struggling to mount successful attacks as they managed only a goal apiece in the two periods.
Th Ranjit gave the police team a 1-0 in the first chukker and A Abungcha made it 2-0 in the following period.
MPSC, however, went into a lull in the third chukker, while Chingkheihunba remained goalless.
The MPSC riders were given the jitters when Kaoba reduced the deficit for his side barely 12 seconds into the last chukker, but the police team went all out and their attacking prowess was on full display in the final period.
Bimol led the fourth-chukker barrage scoring four goals, followed by Abungcha who claimed a double and Ranjit chipped in with a single to help their team earn a smooth passage to the semifinals. Kaoba got his second goal in the period but it was all in vain.
X-Polo Club also faced little resistance as they inflicted an 11-1 hammering on Imphal Riding Club on their way to the last four.
Tolenkhomba registered the first shot on target in the opening chukker before they upped the pace in the second chukker with two goals from P Ojit and one from Th Jacob, while Polar pulled one back for IRC.
L Atangba, M Doren and H Muhindro further stretched their lead to 7-1 before Atangba and Jacob wrapped up the scoring with a double each in the fourth chukker.
The quaterfinal fixtures on Tuesday (November 14) pit Manipur Police Sports Club-B against Samadon Ayangba Polo Team and Tekcham Polo Club against Khurai Polo Club-A.
