ITI students rally, demand competent principal

STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 13th Nov: Exerting pressure on the government for appointing a more competent principal and redressing the various shortcomings in Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Takyel, students of the institute took out a rally till the Education Minister's bungalow on Monday.

Earlier on November 9, angry students burnt down two non-usable cars of the motor mechanic section of the institute in protest against appointment of a new principal, as they believed that he was incompetent to lead the institute.

After many attempts to stop the rally which started from the institute, police finally barricaded the students at Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Leikai and this led to a scuffle between the students and the police personnel. When both Additional SP of Imphal West District and Lamphel SDPO arrived at the scene, 7 students were allowed to meet the Education Minister to air their grievances.

Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of the protest, Manipur ITI Students’ Union secretary Moramba  Langpoklakpam informed that the institute is in such a bad shape today that it has become like a skeleton-less body.

To restore the former glory of ITI, a principal who has M tech or B tech qualifications is needed to lead the institute. Also, the various shortcomings of the institute need to be addressed, he remarked, while appealing to the authorities concerned to help in reviving the institute.
