Mosaic of flowers, music mark first flower festival
R LESTER MAKANG UKHRUL, 12th Nov: Amidst a kaleidoscopic display of myriad flowers, music and distribution of prizes to winners, the first ever Flower Festival on Sunday drew to a colorful close at Thahao Ground, Assam Rifles Town Post here in Ukhrul district headquarters.
DIG, 10 Sector Assam Rifles (Ukhrul) Brigadier Mohit Seth attended the closing function as chief guest while Commanding Officer of 27 Assam Rifles (Ukhrul) Colonel Rajesh Dogra and UBI Kakching branch manager Angam Shimray were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Brig Mohit Seth, while acknowledging the efforts of the Ukhrul Flower Society (UFS), lauded the society for making him a part of the family of the district.
Maintaining that everyone should be proud to be partaking in the making of a history, Mohit Seth noted that there will come a time when people recall this very moment, as the first epochal festival of its kind in the district. “Used as a gift to loved ones, an offer to God, flower is such a delicate beauty yet it is always a powerful tool,” he remarked.
He then assured that the Assam Rifles will always be associating with the festivals and the people of Ukhrul, just as it has been in the past. “We will continue to be an integral part of the festivities, sports and other activities associated with the people of Ukhrul district in the days to come”, the Brigadier said.
Colonel Rajesh Dograh handed over the certificates of appreciation and consolation prizes to the winners of the flower competitions.
In Unique Indigenous Flower, Indigenous Ornamental Flower categories, Shirinchon and Wonrumyar of Shirui village were adjudged the winners with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each.
In the open flower competition, Kazem of Shirui village won the winner's title, while Khayarin Huileng and Athena Chamroy bagged second and third position respectively. The winner, first and second runners up were awarded with Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.
In his welcome speech, Artax Shimray, convener of UFS highlighted that the objective of the event was to promote floriculture for a better livelihood among the flower growers in the district.
He then conveyed that Alice Rimai, Angam Shimray and IK Muivah, DIG, Manipur extended assistance in meeting the prizes for Unique Indigenous Flower, Indigenous Flower Ornamental and Winner for Open Flower Competition respectively.
Popular Tangkhul singer Kingsword Hashimwo, and other artistes from Tangkhul Music Forum, indigenous folk band Feather - Heads and the 27 AR band enthralled the visitors with their beautiful melodies and performances.
Dr Ramakrishnan, head coordinator of KVK Ukhrul, extended special thanks to the Assam Rifles for their logistic support and assistance towards the event, while expressing gratitude to all the participants, government officers, artistes and the public for making the programme a success.
The five day long flower festival which began on November 8 under the theme “Flower for Love & Livelihood” was organised by Ukhrul Flower Society in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ukhrul. Altogether 73 florists from across the district participated in the flower exhibition festival.
