IED found planted, hoax bomb triggers panic

STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 8th Nov: An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found planted at Nagaram in Imphal East while a hoax bomb triggered panic at Moirangkhom in Imphal West district Wednesday.

The IED was found planted along the stretch of Naga Nullah at Nagaram at about 9am.

A police team cordoned off the area soon after receiving the news and called up Manipur police bomb squad.

The IED which was found placed inside a polythene bag was planted with an empty can (fish) full of explosive materials, around half kilogram of nails, a dry cell battery, transistor and some wires. Bomb experts had tough time while defusing the IED when smoke emanated out of the bag. The bomb was safely defused at about 10.30am at Lamphelpat.

Meanwhile, a hoax bomb triggered panic at Moirangkhom area. At about 10.30am, a briefcase was found lying at a motor workshop near Shyamasakhi School. Suspecting that it may contain a bomb, Manipur police bomb squad and bomb experts of 6 Assam Rifles were pressed into service after closing traffic. When the briefcase was opend, it was found to contain only cloths and a file with numerous certificates.

After around two hours, a person claiming to be owner of the briefcase came but he was picked for questioning at Imphal police station. The man was later freed.
