STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 6th Nov: Angered by alleged inaction of the authority concerned despite worsening condition of the road, locals blocked Imphal-Ukhrul road between Khurai Chaithabi Leirak and Chairenthong stretch briefly on Monday morning. Residents of both sides of the road stretch blocked the road from 8am thereby affecting flow of traffic.
Shortly after the agitation, large number Imphal East district police comprising SDPO (Porompat) Sankarjit, DSP (Ops) RK Saklemba and commando OC B Lunthang Vaiphei rushed to the area and pacified the agitators who were blocking the road by forming human chain and piling up logs and tree branches.
The agitators, however, relaxed their stir after holding talk with the police team. To prevent any untoward incident, several teams of district police were deployed in the area to restore normal traffic.
Sources informed that the road stretch between Khurai Lamlong Keithel and Chairenthong deteriorated much since the past four/five months but authority concerned failed to repair the same except near Khurai Sajor Leikai area of the highway.
As the road remained unrepaired, several motor accidents occurred and even claimed lives of several people, sources said, adding that the locals had been facing inconvenience due to dust flying along the road stretch.
Mention may be made that works minister Th Biswajit had assured to develop/maintain all important roads which are in dilapidated condition but rain delayed development work till date. Repair and development of some roads of the state have started just after the recent rain ceased but no such works is seen along Imphal-Ukhrul road till date.
