STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 27th Oct: Chief Minister N Biren Friday reviewed the preparations being taken up by different government departments and agencies for the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival, which will begin from November 21.
During the meeting, the CM discussed several key areas in order to make the upcoming edition of the tourism festival more vibrant. Deputy CM Y Joykumar, works minister Biswajit, forest minister Th Shyamkumar, agriculture minister V Hangkhanlian, PHE L Dikho, MIDA vice-chairman M Asnikumar, Chief Secretary RR Rashmi and department heads attended the review meeting.
Chairing the meeting, Biren appealed to the department officials to put in their best efforts to make the festival different and more vibrant from past editions in order to attract more tourists in the state.
Meanwhile, sources said that budget estimates for organising the tourism festival and item requirements were tabled and approved in the meeting. As the festival would be held in different places, this year’s Sangai Festival is expected to have more expenditures from the past editions.
After a power-point presentation by the tourism department, the CM applauded the department officials for their efforts in promoting the festival through installing display hoardings at major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, metro stations; radio jingles in popular radio channels; and publication in magazines of five popular air services.
Forest department officials also showed a presentation of its initiatives being taken up at Keibul Lamjao and other places. The department would be organising the curtain raiser ceremony from November 19 to 21 at Keibul Lamjao. The CM would be inaugurating the event, which will be marked with a half marathon around Keibul Lamjao under the objective of Sangai protection. The CM also asked the department officials for taking up necessary preparations for the visit of top dignitaries and invitees.
YAS department and MMTA would also be conducting a series of sports events in different hill districts and Takmu in Loktak Lake during the festival. Union minister for tourism would be attending the water sports festival at Takmu on November 22. Besides, MIDA has made preparations for cultural shows based on traditional values during the events at Keibul Lamjao and Takmu.
Friday’s meeting agreed on formation of a team of chief secretary and top officials of different departments led by CM Biren to assess the development works being taken up from Imphal to Moirang, Keibul Lamjao, Sendra and Thanga areas for the festival.
Mention may be made here that President Ram Nath Kovind is expected to inaugurate the NE development summit to be organised by India Foundation and MIDA in Imphal on November 21 morning. Later, he would attend the cultural evening of Manipur Sangai Festival, the festival’s inaugural function at BOAT at 4.30 pm on the same day.
