‘12th Fortnight Barrier Free Campaign 2019’ underway
IMPHAL, 17th Oct: Handicap Development Foundation, Manipur inaugurated the ‘12th Fortnight Barrier Free Campaign 2019’ at Social Welfare Complex here Saturday.
Social Welfare director Ngangom Uttam and Handicap Development Foundation secretary Dr Sapam Jasobanta attended the inaugural function as presidium members.
The dignitaries also released a leaflet and poster concerning the campaign.
Speaking at the occasion, Uttam urged for stopping discrimination against differently abled persons and instead ensure they are treated as normal human beings. This would help bring about a barrier free world. Furthermore, as per Court orders, all government and private offices, departments should be made accessible to differently abled persons, he conveyed.
Pointing out that the biggest task is to change and breakdown the barriers in our minds and thinking, the director observed that many offices/departments are yet to overcome structural barriers. Although the Social Welfare Department has opened a cell for differently abled persons on the ground floor, similar initiatives are yet be taken up in other departments/offices, he remarked, adding that the department has been taking up various initiatives for the welfare of differently abled persons.
