Land owners oppose police HQ plan

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 16th Oct: In the backdrop of the government’s move to construct a police headquarters for state police at 9-Chingmeirong Nongpok under Imphal East district, State Social Impact Assessment Unit in association with Directorate of Environment organised a public hearing at ADC quarters complex located at Sangakpham on Wednesday wherein owners of the land to be covered by the facility, if constructed, registered strong protest against the move.
During the public hearing, government’s representatives highlighted the benefits to be provided by development of a police headquarters to the people especially locals of Chingmeirong Nongpok. On the other hand, members of 16 families settling at the proposed site for the police headquarters to be spread over 10 acres of land raised their objection to the government’s plan.
Thomas, one of the family members, who attended the hearing, pointed out that the proposed site affects land belonging to St Anthony School run under St Anthony Education Society, a non-profit society. He said that the government’s bid to evict land including that of the school where more than 2000 students are studying suggests that the government is willing to put future of the students at stake.
