CSOs-Govt sign truce, many oppose

IMPHAL, 16th Oct: Leaders of several Kuki CSOs including Kuki Inpi Manipur have agreed to replace the word ‘ancestral’ with ‘dignity’ in the inscription on the memorial stones for Anglo-Kuki War centenary commemoration scheduled for October 17, during a meeting with chief minister N Biren on Wednesday. According to a reliable sources, apart from replacing the word ‘ancestral’ with dignity, the meeting also agreed for the government to develop a special memorial park in the name of the historical episode and declare October 17 as state holiday. Following the agreement, CM Biren would be attending the Anglo-Kuki War centenary commemoration event to be held at C Aisan village in Saikul sub-division of Kangpokpi district on Thursday.
However, several Kuki CSOs are not satisfied with the agreement and are sticking to the already planned events and inscription. Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi district, in a statement, said that it cannot accept the agreement and will continue the observance as planned. It further stated that they cannot replace the word ‘ancestral’ with any other words.
Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi will not attend the observance to be held in Saikul sub-division and any other event to be hosted by Kuki Inpi Manipur, the statement added.
