Locals threaten stir over non-repair of bridge
IMPHAL, 15th Oct: Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) former secretary and Public Club founder president Laishram Manglem has threatened to launch various forms of intense agitation by residents of four localities if the government does not repair Baruni bridge built over Iril River connecting Top Khongnangmakhong and Kshetrigao at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons, Manglem recalled that Baruni bridge, which also connects Top Wangma with Top Khongnangmakhong and Kshetrigao, was constructed by the then Kshetrigao AC MLA Md Muhamiddin in 1983 as per his assurance and dedicated it to the locals in 1988 but the government has been turning a blind eye to the present dilapidated condition of the important structure. He regretted that MLAs of Khurai AC and Kshetrigao AC are well aware of the present condition of the bridge situated in between Khurai AC and Kshetrigao AC but they chose to remain mute, leaving the locals in the lurch.
He pointed out that the bridge has already developed holes with snapping of its railing, thereby posing a serious threat to the locals who now fear of crossing over it. Conveying that the locals would be compelled to cross either Moirangkampu bridge or Naharup bridge if Baruni bridge collapses, Manglem urged the government to repair the bridge as early as possibly failing which locals of four localities would take up various forms of intense agitation.
