Meet dissects state of women empowerment

IMPHAL, 12th Oct: The 31st State Conference of All Manipur Nupi Marup, which commenced from Saturday at GM Hall Imphal discussed the present state of women empowerment in the country.
Speaking at the occasion, All Manipur Nupi Marup general secretary L Sumatibala expressed concern over the oppression of women folk in the state as well in the country. She highlighted the failure of ensuring 33 per cent reservation of seats for women in parliament and state assemblies and how BJP ministers, MLAs, MPs and leaders are involved in rape, murder and harassment of women across the country.
National Federation of India Women is spearheading a mass movement against such administration of BJP under which women are still facing suppression in terms of social, administration, economy, jobs and decision making while the whole world is moving towards upholding women’s rights and equality to another level after United Nations declared 1975 as the international year for women, she said.
She further said that women are enjoying such rights and freedom in socialist countries across the globe. Freedom and equality in its true sense for women would help in bringing about an equal and developed society, the secretary maintained.
Regarding the organisation, Sumatibala said that since its inception, Nupi Marup has been working against the menace of drugs and alcohol as well as other socio-political issues including the fight against AFSPA. She also highlighted the organisation’s contribution in the movement for protection of the state’s integrity, passage of The Manipur People Protection Bill 2018 & subsequent demand for President’s assent, Naga Peace talk issue and others.
Manipur State Commission for women chairperson Dr M Binota, All Manipur Nupi Marup president Sakhi, former president S Sarojini, patron members M Kadambini, Y Ibeni & T Ibemhal, Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup vice-president RK Sanahanbi, general secretary L Memma, Minority Muslim Vendors’ Union president Jano Begum, and former principal of DM College A Sanahanbi attended the programme as presidium members.
