International Day of Older Person observed at Wangbal
THOUBAL, 12th Oct: International Day of Older Person was observed at Integrated Rural Development and Educational Organisation (IRDEO) complex, Wangbal in Thoubal distrct on Saturday.
Organised by Regional Resource Training Centre (Ageing)-NE, IRDEO in collaboration with various other NGOs working for welfare of elderly persons, the observance programme was attended by Khangabok MLA O Surjakumar as chief guest, Senior Citizen Welfare Forum Manipur president Dr M Rajendra as president while Thoubal district SP Dr S Ibomcha, district social welfare officer Thoubal A Kameshwor and social worker K Jadumani were guests of honour.
It was also attended by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment undersecretary (ageing) Anand Prakash Gupta and section officer (ageing) Binay Kumar as special guests. Speaking at the occasion, MLA Surjakumar lamented that there is growing chasm between elderly persons and youth of contemporary society. Contrary to the past when the elders were highly respected today’s youngsters act indifferently towards the elders with many being rude to them, the young MLA noted and stressed that the society will benefit if one preserves the age old tradition of honouring the senior citizens.
He also noted that there have been frequent complaints from pensioners in Thoubal district that they are not receiving pension through their bank accounts due to some documentation issues and appealed to DSWO Thoubal to look into the matter.
At the start of the programme, a walkathon was organised from Khangabok BASU Ground and ended at IRDEO Complex, Wangbal with participation of students, members of various NGOs and CSOs.
A painting competition for students and a free medical camp were also conducted as a part of the observance during which 1700 elderly people from different parts of the state were honoured with presentation of blankets and 900 students presented gifts.
