Manipur tops MSME registration in NE: CM
IMPHAL, 11th Oct: Chief minister N Biren said that Manipur has emerged top in terms of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) businesses registration among the North Eastern states and rose above the national average.
Addressing a press conference at the CM’s secretariat here on Friday, Biren said that according to the annual Report published by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, during 2015-19, MSME business registration in Manipur is 12,438 which is more than all of the remaining northeast states combined together which is 6695. He also stated that Manipur has topped in women ownership in MSME businesses. India's 20 percent MSME businesses are owned by women while in Manipur women own 50 percent of MSME businesses, he added.
The CM said that Manipur's share in MSME businesses is also higher than the state's share in national population. Manipur's share in national population is only 0.2 per cent while the state's share in MSME businesses is 0.3 percent. In India, for every one lakh population there are 4770 MSME businesses while in Manipur it is 6500 MSME per lakh population.
The present government could bring rapid economic growth of businesses in the state with the support and co-operation of the people. The government is extending grants and soft loans to entrepreneurs and unemployed youth through various schemes such as Start-up policy, he said and added that the government would continue to support and empower the entrepreneurs of the state.
The figure corresponds with the data of state taxation department, which shows increase in number of MSMEs from 653 to 16,381 during the period. In the last 15 years the compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) has reached 25 per cent and 60 per cent of the growth is achieved in the last two years, he said.
He also highlighted the government’s latest scheme of Stand-Up Manipur, which will provide financial support to entrepreneurs from OBC, SC and ST communities.
CAF&PD minister Karam Shyam, PHE minister Losii Dikho, agriculture minister V Hangkhanlian, deputy speaker K Robindro, Tourism Corporation of Manipur Ltd chairman Dr Sapam Ranjan, MLAs S Bira, L Susindro, Y Surchandra, O Lukhoi and Th Satyabratra were also present at the press conference.
