IMPHAL, 11th Oct: Special judge POCSO, Imphal West sent Konjengbam Nipamacha to 15 years rigorous imprisonment apart from asking him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. The court had already convicted Nipamacha of outraging modesty of a minor girl on August 22, 2015.
During the sentence hearing conducted Friday, special PP prayed before the court that the crime committed by Nipamacha was a heinous one and he should be awarded befitting punishment under Section 6 of POSCO Act. However, the defence counsel appealed to the court for leniency on the ground that the convict has no past criminal record, has asthma problem and could not move alone without the help of another person. After perusing arguments from both the sides, the court declared that the crime committed by Nipamacha was frightening and a serious one and sent him to 15 years rigorous imprisonment. The court also ordered Nipamacha to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, which is to be given to the victim. The court further ordered that authority concerned should pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the victim under Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme-2019.
