Germany, Spain, Brazil, Iran reach Round 16 of U-17 World Cup

AGENCIES KOCHI, 13th Oct: European powerhouse Germany bounced back from their shock defeat in the previous match as they beat African side Guinea 3-1 to qualify for the knockout round of the FIFA U-17 World Cup here on Friday.

Germany scored through Jan-Fiete Arp (8th minute), Nicolas Kuehn (62nd) and Sahverdi Cetin (90+2), while Ibrahima Soumah got the lone goal for Guinea in the 26th minute in the final Group C match at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.

Germany, who had lost to Iran 0-4 in their previous match, finished second in the group with six points and qualified for the Round of 16. They face Colombia, who finished second in Group A, in the Round of 16 match in New Delhi on October 16.

First-half goals from Lincoln and Brenner gave Brazil a 2-0 victory over Niger and top spot in Group D at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. They advance to the Round of 16 along with Friday’s opponents, as the Junior Menas claimed one of the best third-place spots in the knockout stages. The South American champions took the lead just four minutes in when Paulinho played a superb low cross into the path of Lincoln at the far post, with the Flamengo striker duly converting the opportunity.

Brazil then created numerous chances, but a second goal did not arrive until ten minutes before the break when Brenner’s free-kick took a big deflection off the Nigerien wall before finding the back of the net. The second half did not have the same pace and urgency as the opening period, with Brazil strolling with relative ease to a third-straight win and maintaining a 100 per cent record at the competition to date.

La Rojita overcame a dogged Korea DPR defence to win 2-0 and secure their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.

Mostly set-up in the attacking half, the Spanish dominated possession and attempts, but they only managed to put the match away in the late going after an early goal set them on their way.

The opener came in just the fourth minute as Cesar Gelabert found Mohamed Moukhliss, who cut through the middle of the defence and finished simply in the end.

Moukhliss and Gelabert combined repeatedly to threaten the Korean goal, but goalkeeper Sin Tae Song was up to the task and Spanish coach Santi will need to worry about his side’s finishing.

Gelabert finally found a second in the 71st minute after a rare moment of Kroean disorganisation saw the ball loose in front of net. Iran claimed top spot in Group C at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 after a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in Goa on Friday. Defeat for the central Americans sees them miss out on the knockout stages after earning just one point from three group games.
